Make It Monday

For our craft this week, we created beautiful tulip fields with forks! All you need is some white paper, a green crayon, paint colors of choice, and forks. I put a blob of red, yellow, and blue paint on a brown grocery bag so my son could easily dab his fork into the paint. He made several pictures with many different colored tulips!

This was such an easy, but engaging activity. I loved how he could really make his tulip garden look however he wanted. He even mixed the colors toward the end to create purple and orange. His pictures made the best spring fridge decorations too!

So let your little at home or students at home fill their spring gardens with a fun spin on painting. Great way to encourage independence, but also color identification and describing. Plus you will have some gorgeous pictures to cover your bulletin boards!

Take A Trip Tuesday

To really get into a spring-y mood, we took a trip to the local hardware store to grab everything we needed to plant a flower! My boys enjoyed picking out which flower seeds to plant, finding a planter, and exploring the store’s gardening center.

Once we were home, we planted our seeds in the soil, watered them, and gave them prime real estate on the kitchen’s sink window sill. This was a great spring activity idea to target sequencing and direction following. Plus we can’t wait to see our flowers sprout!

Water Wednesday

For our spring water activity, we did an easy science experiment that just about anybody can do! You will definitely want to make your own rain cloud to celebrate the first day of spring. All you need is a clear jar or glass, shaving cream, blue food coloring, an eyedropper, and water.

Rain cloud in a jar water science experiment

Here are the directions to create your very own rain cloud:

  • Mix some blue food coloring into a bit of water.
  • Fill a glass or clear jar with water.
  • Cover the top with shaving cream.
  • Use an eye dropper to release small “rain drops” of blue food coloring on top of the cloud.
  • Watch the rain fall inside.

This is a great activity for any spring or weather themed unit, but also targets direction following, inferencing, sequencing, vocabulary, turn-taking, and more! As the weather continues to get warmer, I even hope to create some rain clouds during a whole group speech and language lesson.

Thinking Thursday

Our book this week is a fan favorite: Goodbye Winter, Hello Spring. This story includes lots of descriptive language when transitioning from the cold and ice of winter to the light and brightness of spring. With beautiful illustrations, you can target a variety of language skills such as WH questions, adjective + noun phrases, comparing and contrasting, sequencing, and more!

Print and laminate the vocabulary cards to hide around the classroom or place into a sensory bin. Use the sentence strip visual to create 4-5 word utterances. Use the find and color or find and cover pages for additional activity. Pair the hidden spring picture scene with any of the above ideas for a fully comprehensive vocabulary activity for your next spring speech and language session!

Sensory Sunday

Our last spring inspired activity is an easy weather sorting bin to help target categorizing, describing, fine motor skills, and more. It is no secret we love sensory bins so we are super excited to share this spring themed bin with you. Check it out below!

Grab a variety of different yellow, blue, and white pom-poms to represent spring weather: sunny, rainy, and cloudy. I chose several sizes and texture of pom poms as well. Then have your students use tongs or scoops to sort each type of weather into labeled cups. After they took a few turns, I let them just play in the bin for a bit of sensory fun! So easy and made for a great spring language session!
