Each of the following activities target the following spatial concepts: IN, UNDER, ON, IN FRONT, NEXT TO, BETWEEN, BEHIND, OVER, AROUND, ABOVE, OUT, THROUGH. These low prep, interactive, hands-on spatial preposition activities also provided opportunities for increased sentence length, direction following, and describing too.

Best part? Every activity comes in both full color for repeated use AND black and white for easy, quick low prep.

Spring Preposition Match

This activity is just as it sounds…a simple matching game! Students can match each spatial concept to a picture, written word, or symbol. Perfect way to quickly review concepts and see which are lacking!

Print the pictures, written words, or symbols. Then print and cut out the corresponding spatial preposition cards. Hide cards in a sensory bin, lay out in a field of three, or simply review each individual card. Such an easy, but simple way to introduce spatial prepositions with a cute bee theme!

Spring Preposition Cover Cards

For this next preposition activity, have students look at the picture then cover the corresponding answer with a mini-eraser, pom pom, BINGO chip, or any other small manipulative. To incorporate some fine motor skills, have students use a cloth pin to “clip” the correct answer. Ideal for a quick review or co-treating with occupationally therapy.

Spring Preposition Punch Cards

We love these punch cards. Not only do students get to practice their spatial concepts, but also their fine motor skills as well. These cards are perfect for co-therapy with your fellow OT. Students can clip clothespins or paperclips onto the targeted concepts. Or use a single hole punch to identify each correct response.

Want to reuse them? Laminate each spatial concepts and have students mark each correct picture with a dry eraser marker!

Spring Preposition Smash Mats

Who doesn’t love a good ol’ fashioned smash mat?! We had to include these quick and easy spatial concepts smash mats for those hectic days with limited plan time! Just print and slide into a page protector. Print and cut the corresponding picture cards. Have students smash with play dough once they have found the matching concept!

Spin A Spring Preposition

Our students love any opportunity to use a spinner in sessions. Just lay the clear spinner over the choices. With the large colored honey jar and bee, have students demonstrate the correct spatial preposition. Perfect for small groups to incorporate both identification and labeling of each concept. Plus students will have to practice waiting turns as well!

Pick A Spring Preposition

This next activity is similar to the above, but targets each spatial preposition at the phrase level. Choose a picture with a matching phrase then have students move the bee to the correct position. Super easy, but a great way to increase the difficulty for those older students.

Spring Preposition BINGO

Want to play BINGO…spatial preposition style? Then we have you covered! We have included everything you need to play the game such as multiple different BINGO cards, calling cards, and marker chips. This game is ideal for larger groups or whole class instruction!

2-Part Spring Preposition Cards

This next activity is great for older students with concepts embedded in each sentence! Cut apart the sentence and the picture. Have students match the sentence to the picture. Laminate and use repeatedly. Or have students cut and paste the sentences and pictures together for a perfect take home carry-over activity!

Spring Preposition Interactive Book

As your students become more accurate identifying and labeling spatial prepositions, we have the coolest interactive book to keep the progress going! Print & laminate the full color pages. Have students place the bee in the correct place. To help you differentiate during your speech and language sessions, we have two versions available: sentence level and sentence with visuals level.

Student Spring Preposition Book

Students (and speech-language pathologists 😉) love these mini-books! They come in black and white, which is a perfect low-ink option, but allows your students to color in each page. Use in your speech and language sessions to review spatial concepts within sentences. These books also work great for speech homework. Parents can review concepts with the clear pictures as well as the sentence strip at the bottom of each page.

Make A Spring Preposition Scene

I personally love these colorful scenes for small group rotations in my preschool classrooms. With the little bees, each students gets multiple opportunities to place them within the picture scene and produce sentences to describe their bee. Such a quick and easy way to incorporate prepositions in a more play based setting.

Spring Preposition Scavenger Hunt

And last but certainly not least, we have an awesome spatial preposition scavenger hunt to get your students up, moving, and practicing their language skills. Hide the concept pictures around the room or place in a sensory bin. Have students find the pictures. They can label and identify the prepositions then check each word off as they go. Use the Find & Color page to color and discuss all of the included spatial concepts too!
