Sentence Formulation & Expansion

After you ask the what question and your student finds the correct vocabulary response, place the picture on the sentence strip visual on the bottom of the file folder. The sentence strip encourages increased mean length of utterance by creating 4-5 word sentences to answer each question with the correct vocabulary.

Even with a paired visual and a clarified question, a student still may struggle when formulating a response. After asking the question, providing a carrier phrase can help students better understand how to answer each question. For example, if the target question is “What do you sit on at school?”, a carrier phrase could be “We sit on a…” to allow the student a few more context clues and support. In addition, this provides repeated exposure to complete sentences which is always welcomed!

Pronouns & Spatial Prepositions

Another great skill to work into this what question activity is pronoun and spatial preposition usage! When placing the vocabulary concept on the picture, students can use the correct pronoun and spatial preposition to describe the scene. Ideal for mixed language groups with a variety of goals.
