Pet Themed Activity #1: Book
For these week’s whole group lesson book, we went with What Pet To Get? by Emma Dodd. And we are so glad we did! The kids LOVED it! A little boy thinks and thinks about what pet to get while his mother gives reasons why his choice might not be the best idea. This book was great for not only discussing what makes a good pet choice, but also worked on predicting and describing along the way!
Pet Themed Activity #2: Interactive Fun!
Another awesome pet themed activity targets so many skills! Grab yourself a Critter Clinic today and we promise you won’t regret it! Students use colored keys to open the matching door. For our pet themed speech therapy whole group lesson, check out what we like to place behind each door:
- Pet Minis Unit from The Speech Tree Co
- Speech Sound Cards from Bjorem
- Stuffed dog and cat that comes with the toy
- Leave it empty for a chance to practice different language concepts

During the whole group speech and language lesson, students can take turns choosing a key and opening a door. We encourage students to share in a complete sentence what is inside (or not inside!). Plus this activity is perfect for targeting a variety of core words including, but not limited to “open”, “close”, “turn”, “in”, “out”, and “more”. The toy can be used for not only the theme of pets, but so many others too!

Pet Themed Activity #3: Technology
We typically incorporate an activity on the Smartboard to encourage turn-taking during our whole group speech and language lessons. For our pets themed speech therapy whole group lesson, we really love these Pet Themed BOOM Cards from the Speech Tree Co. With over 80 cards and 10 different language targets.

Pet Themed Activity #4: Song Time!
With lots of different song options out there, you really can’t go wrong with any of the song links below! Our favorite is “Do You Have A Pet?” As the song continues, the lyrics build each time creating super descriptive sentences. Check out all of these pet themed songs to end your themed whole group lesson with some movement!
Pet Themed Activity #5: Scavenger Hunts
If you happen to move through the above activities super quick or just have additional time, we suggest these super fun and versatile scavenger hunts! Simply print out the vocabulary cards and choose from the following activities: scavenger hunt vocabulary checklist, find and color page, find and cover page, or hidden picture scene.
