How to effortlessly plan 15 activities for final consonant deletion

Final consonant deletion occurs when endings of words are left off or cut short. Children often do this as a quick shortcut during early speech and language development, but it typically resolves by the age of three. When this error persists past age three, these deletions can make overall speech intelligibility very poor. Final consonant deletion is one of the many patterns referred to as a phonological process disorder.

If you have a student who struggles with this phonological process, students awareness levels can range from completely unfazed to extremely frustrated. Keep reading for 15 different activities for final consonant deletion plus several FREEBIES to effortlessly plan your speech sessions. Therapy ideas include our favorite visuals, hands-on materials, worksheets, and play-based activities!

15 Activities For Final Consonant Deletion

Phonemic Hand Cues

Phonemic hand cues are the perfect introduction for teaching letter sounds as well as the placement and manner of target sounds. By pairing the final sound with a gesture, the student is able to recognize their omission and emphasize the sound. This activity works wonders for those kinesthetic learners and can be used during the rest of the activities listed below! Annnnd this particular video happens to pair with Jack Hartmann’s Learning Letter Sounds…always a hit with our students!

Watch for the visual cues for the letter sounds to mark final consonants.

Minimal Pairs Practice

Minimal pairs are another good introductory activity for final consonant deletion. These pairs are words that differ by a single sound. For example, “moo” and “moon” differ by one change. Leaving off the final sound changes the word meaning. Helping students better understand minimal pairs can help them to produce final consonants. Auditory Bombardment Stories

Once you have taught the target sounds with visual cues (and probably listened to the Jack Hartmann ABC song a million times!), you can introduce a super easy, but effective activity, reading sound loaded books! Books help with auditory bombardment and are a great way to increase overall vocabulary. In addition, books are a perfect homework suggestion for parents. To reinforce the final sound production, check out this final sound book list (with story links included) for frequent final consonant deletion errors.

Hands-On Activities

To help our students visualize their sounds, we love to have them use their hands! Check out these hands-on activities to target final consonant deletion and engage your students.

Slide & Slap

Using a dry erase board or blank piece of paper, we often right out their target words. With a marker or finger slide at the beginning of the word followed by a slap on the table students can pair another motion with their ending sounds. This fun activity often gets lots of productions as well as laughs!

Train Car Sounds

This activity is a usually a hit with all my groups! They love to play with the trains in between turns, but also are super interested in producing their sounds. Have a longer train to represent the beginning of the word then add a train car or “caboose” when adding the final consonant.

Block Towers

While building with blocks, students can make a tower for the start of their target word. When adding a block at the top students can visualize their sounds while saying them. If you don’t have square blocks on hand, Jenga blocks will work as well!

Puzzle Pieces

Another highly visual way to target final consonants or the endings of words is to pair sounds with puzzle pieces. For this activity, all you have to use two puzzle pieces. While putting the pieces together, be sure to practice that final ending sound! We like to use these puzzles from Melissa & Doug. Just flip the large pieces over and use a dry erase marker to draw a picture or write the target word.

Step & Stomp

Much like the Slide & Slap described above, this activity really gets the students up and moving while practicing their sounds. Have students walk slowly over the beginning sounds of the target word then stomp or jump onto the ending sound. We like to use plastic paper plates to write out the word then lay them on the floor. Let the kids stomp away while saying their ending sounds!

We love a good smash mat and so do our students! Bust out the Play-Doh, paints dotters, or anything else you have on hand! After practicing the target word cover up the picture.
