Summer is almost here! And for some of you, the panic is setting in! What should you do these next few months? How will you fill your time with your kids or students? How do you encourage language development during the summer months? All valid concerns! Keep reading for fun summer theme ideas to help you keep your kids entertained while fostering a language rich environment all season long.
Fun Summer Schedule
Last summer, we picked eight different weekly themes for our kiddos! Those included: Farm, Zoo, Human Body, Spy, Holiday, Rockstar, Community Helper, & LEGO©️.
Every day had a focused activity to encourage vocabulary development, language in natural contexts, and create hands-on experiences. Here is the daily schedule we followed for the entire summer regardless of the theme!
- Make It Monday
- Some type of craft or project to hang on the fridge.
- Take A Trip Tuesday
- Walk, drive, or bike to an experience outside of the house.
- Water Wednesday
- Use water for a project, science experiment, or sensory play.
- Thinking Thursday
- Check out a themed book plus activity for vocabulary or comprehension.
- Foodie Friday
- Yum! Make a treat and enjoy!
- Cinema Saturday
- Relax and watch a movie as a family.
- Sensory Sunday
- Create a sensory bin or get messy with a project.
Farm Week
To kick things off, we have all things farm! From an easy muddy pig craft to counting farm animals to popcorn on the cob, you will have endless ideas for an entire week. Click here or the image below to read more about all seven activities!
Zoo Week

Human Body Week
Arguably the most fun themed week we have done so far! And our kids couldn’t agree more! Since our kids are OBSESSED with the human body, naturally we needed to dedicate an entire fun summer week to the theme of the human body. Click here to see what we did!
Spy Week
Calling all Nancy Drews, Inspector Gadgets, and Scooby-Doos! We had a whole week of spy summer fun! From invisible ink messages to magnifying glass Oreo treats, we had a ton of fun exercising our detective skills while using spy themed language all week. Holiday Week
Ho, ho, ho! Merry summer! We embraced a holiday theme full of cheer and good tidings for this summer themed week. We ventured to Santa Claus, IN and back plus had lots of fun creating some mementos for our Christmas in July celebration. Click here to see how we kept things festive and fun this summer!
Rockstar Week
WE WILL, WE WILL ROCK YOU for a week’s fun summer rockstar theme! While we love all kinds of music in our house, everybody was a head banging, crowd-surfing rockstar all week. From a concert on the beach to delicious microphone cupcakes, we recommend grooving and dancing through this summer week of rockstar themed activities just like the greats. Community Helper Week
Our kids LOVE dressing up and playing pretend. They will dress up as firefighters, doctors, construction workers, and more. From vocabulary to reciprocal conversation to turn taking, the amount of language we hear is incredible! So naturally we decided to dedicate an entire fun summer themed week to community helpers! LEGO® Week
EVERYTHING IS AWESOME when you have an entire fun summer week of LEGO® themed activities! Our kids can spend hours on end independently creating and pretending with LEGO bricks. While this is indeed awesome, we came up with a fun summer week dedicated solely to LEGO activities and our kids were all in! Click here to read for more awesomeness!
