Dinosaur Speech Therapy Activities

Dinosaur Vocabulary Scavenger Hunt

Getting kids to work while thinking they aren’t working is an art for sure! This Dinosaur Vocabulary Scavenger Hunt does just that! With one activity, you can target vocabulary building, mean length of utterance, and direction following all while playing a fun search and find game.

First, print and hide the dinosaur pictures around the speech room or in a sensory bin. Use the checklist, find and color page, or find and cover page. Students will learn and review the following vocabulary: Pterodactyl, Egg, Ankylosaurus, Palm Tree, Brontosaurus, Velociraptor, Rocks, Spinosaurus, Stegosaurus, Volcano, Tyrannosaurus, Footprint, Triceratops, Brachiosaurus, Grass, Plesiosaurus.

There is also a full prehistoric scene included. We like projecting this PDF onto the Smartboard and have students come up to the board to locate each hidden vocabulary concepts. Encourage students to not only label the concepts, but describe where they are located using accurate spatial preposition phrases.

Dinosaur Sensory Bin

When pushing into classrooms, we like bringing in lots of play based activities. One easy play based activity is a themed sensory bin. Sensory bins have so many benefits and elicit so much language. If you want to read more on how obsessed we are, check out this blog post all about sensory bins!

Dinosaur egg sensory bin

For our dinosaur sensory bin, we use mini dinos, balloons, and ice to make a fun Jurassic themed activity! Simply put a mini dinosaur figure in a balloon. Fill the balloon with approximately 1/3 cup of water and tie. Repeat with at least 10 balloons! Place all the balloons into the freezer. Once completely frozen, cut off the balloons to reveal some prehistoric dinosaur ice eggs!

Use our dinosaur checklist from the Dinosaur Vocabulary Scavenger Hunt Activity described above! Students can chip away at the ice eggs and identify a variety of dinosaur concepts. Students will love being amateur archaeologists during the best dinosaur speech therapy session!

Dinosaur Song

Pretty much anything Laurie Berkner does is preschool magic, but “We Are The Dinosaurs” really the best! We love this song to get students up and moving plus following along to directions. This song is perfect to play at the end of a dinosaur speech therapy session or during a whole group lesson. Check out the music video link below!

Did you know there is a super cute book to go with this song too? I stumbled upon this adorable picture book with the song lyrics included when planning my son’s first birthday party. Of course I immediately added it to our home library, but snagged a copy for school as well!

Dinosaur Speech Therapy Articulation Craft

When practicing speech sounds, we are always looking for ways to increase our students’ productions during each sessions. With this Dinosaur Speech Therapy Articulation Craft, you will elicit tons of target sound productions, but also keep your students engaged and busy!

First, choose the prehistoric background…volcano or jungle. Then, choose the appropriate page of target words. Students can practice and color the dinosaurs. Following that, have them cut out each dinosaur while saying the words again. Lastly, practice the words one more time while gluing on each word to the background. Finish the session by pointing and saying each word or send home the finalized craft for carry-over at home!

Dinosaur “Chalk” Drawings

Another super great book is “Chalk” by Bill Thomson. We love this book because it is a wordless picture book. These books are ideal for overall story grammar introduction and practice. Students can identify and label the characters, setting, problem, solution, etc. I like pairing the Story Champs Story Grammar Icons with each story. Wonderful tool if you have access to it! Wordless books are a perfect way to practice cohesive and organized narrative retells.

And when planning a dinosaur speech therapy session, “Chalk” is always included. After finding some magical chalk, a few curious children bring a tyrannosaurus rex to life. After the story, we have our students create their own chalk drawings. You can keep the artwork for speech room decor or send home to encourage narrative retell at home!
