The Birthday Box Book
We LOVE the cute board books from Leslie Patricelli and our students do too! Whether you read this in a small group or with an entire class, students will have lots of fun acting out the various birthday box surprises. It is always interesting to hear our students’ guesses on what is inside the box too!
To go along with the story, we like to wrap a box like a birthday present with a stuffed puppy inside just like the story. We have the students guess what they think the present is then have the puppy “jump” out to say hello! We place the puppy under, over, in, next to, etc. and have our students state where the puppy is located. This birthday speech therapy activity works great for both small and large groups!

Birthday Party Vocabulary Scavenger Hunt
Want a super fun and exciting birthday speech activity to target vocabulary AND get your students moving? We have it right here! This expressive and receptive vocabulary activity has multiple uses and keeps students engaged! Check out we use our versatile Birthday Party Vocabulary Scavenger Hunt resource to fit into our themed speech sessions.
First, print and laminate the vocabulary cards to hide around the classroom or place into a sensory bin. Use the sentence strip visual to create 4-5 word utterances. Targeted birthday party vocabulary words include: Balloon, Card, Present, Banner, Gift Bag, Noise Maker, Slice of Cake, Cake, Streamer, Candle, Ice Cream Sundae, Party Hat, Confetti, Cupcake. Once found, check out each concept on the vocabulary checklist!
In addition, students can search for the cards in a colorful hidden picture birthday scene. Once found, they can color the concepts on the Find & Color page or just cover the words on the Cover & Find page. We have even displayed the hidden picture scene on the classroom Smart Board so students can take turns and circle concepts that way too!

Birthday Gift Boxes
These brightly colored gift boxes from Learning Resources are an awesome addition to any birthday themed speech and language session. Use these Counting Surprise Party Boxes to target functional language as well as labeling and describing. We made a simple language board to help students match concepts and increase MLU.
These boxes can be used with the mini objects that come with the set or paired with other objects as well. We like to use Speech Tree Co cycles minis to work in phonological patterns during our small groups. Check out the phonological patterns mini set here if you are interested!
Guess The Gift Boom Cards
Throughout our week, Mandy and I both run whole group lessons in our early childhood classrooms. During those groups, we like to incorporate the Smart Board to encouraging turn-taking and interacting with the screen in a functional and meaningful way.
For our birthday speech therapy lessons, we found these Listen! What Do You Hear? Guess The Gift Boom cards by Pinwheel Speech Products. The students go wild for these guessing cards! These cards are a great way to target inferencing in an unique way by listening to a variety of sounds. Plus they pair perfectly with a birthday box themed lesson! Highly recommend!
